Prof. M. Nagaraj
Was the first Vice-Chancellor of the University (from 10th Sept. 1980 to 1st Nov, 1984). Before joining here, he was a Professor of Botany in Bangalore University, with a Ph.D. from Chicago University. He organised the University administration including a separate Examination Section. The examinations of the University were conducted from academic year 1981-82 onwards. Nine Departments were started during his term - Botany, Zoology, Physics, Biochemistry, Library and Information Science, History, Marathi, Sanskrit, and Social work. A separate P.G. course in statistics was also started under Mathematics Department. Prof. Nagaraj prepared the growth plans for the University and pioneered its development on sound lines. The Foundation Stone for the Administrative Building (Karya Soudha) was laid by the then Chief Minister, Sri. R. Gundu Rao in October 1981 during Prof. Nagaraj's tenure.
Prof. Ha. Ma. Nayak
The second Vice-Chancellor (from 2nd Nov; 1984 to 15th Feb. 1987), was an eminent linguist and Kannada writer. He came from Mysore University. He established the Institute of Kannada Studies (Kannada Adhyayana Sansthe), renaming the Department of Kannada and boosting its research activities. A P.G. programme in Janapada Sahitya (Folk literature) was started under the new Institute. The University's research Journal, Jnanaganga, and also extension lectures were started. The Rajyotsava awards by the University were started to promote quality literature and Art. Foundation Stones for new buildings for Applied Electronics, Microbiology and Mathematics were laid. The Authorities of the University (Syndicate, Academic Council and Syndicate) were duly constituted. The University school was started. Plans were initiated for starting new PG Centres at Bellary, Raichur and Bidar. Prof. Ha.Ma. Nayak also tried to inculcate the habit of processing the files in Kannada. He resigned before the completion of his tenure, owning moral responsibility for malpractices in examination.
Prof. K. H. Cheluvaraju
Was the third Vice-Chancellor of the University (from 16th Feb: 1987 to 15th Feb. 1990). He was Professor of Political Science in Bangalore University before coming to Gulbarga. During his tenure, Administrative building (Karya Soudha) was inaugurated on 19th Oct. 1987 and the Social Science Block was built. More residential quarters were added. Departments of Psychology, Law and Education were started. Biochemistry was separated from Chemistry as a separate Department. Further steps were taken in establishing P.G. Centres at Bellary, Raichur and Bidar.
Prof. N. Rudraiah
Was the fourth Vice-Chancellor and was the first to serve two complete terms (from 16th Feb. 1990 to 15th Feb. 1996). He was a professor of Mathematics in Bangalore University. He was instrumental in getting a large grant of Rs. Seven crores from the newly started Hyderabad Karnataka Development Board to improve the infrastructure in the University. Several new buildings were started including the huge Indoor Stadium. Many vacant positions and newly created posts were filled, which strengthened the Departments. P.G. Centres at Raichur, Bellary and Bidar were started. MBA and Industrial Chemistry were started in Bellary, and Instrumentation Science was started in Raichur. P.G. courses in Biotechnology, MCA, and Pharmaceutical chemistry were also started. The College Development Council was established.
Prof. M. Muniyamma
Who came next, was the first woman Vice-Chancellor (from 16th Feb. 1996 to 15th Feb. 1999). She was a Professor of Botany at Mysore University earlier. She obtained grants from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, and initiated the construction of Working Women's Hostel in the main campus and also in PG centres at Raichur, Bellary and Sandur. The construction of Pariksha Bhavan and Dr. Ambedkar Birth Centenary Hostel was started. The two majestic main gates of the University, Chalukya Mahadwara and Rashtrakuta Mahadwara, were built. The Department of Bio-technology of the Government of India, recognised the University's Bio-technology Department and granted it three projects. The Master's programme in Women’s Studies was also started during her tenure. Infrastructure in the Departments was further improved. The PG Centre building in Bellary was inaugurated. The SAARC Festival took place during her tenure. The Institute of Sugar Technology at Bidar was started, offering a Diploma in 1996.
Prof. J. S. Patil
Was Vice-Chancellor for two days (16th and 17th February 1999) as the next Vice-Chancellor designates joining was delayed. Prof. Patil was the Dean of Law in Gulbarga University at that time, a position in which he still continues.
Prof. M. V. Nandkarni
Took over as the Vice-Chancellor on 18th February 1999. He was the first Vice-Chancellor to come from outside the University stream. He was Professor of Ecological Economics in the Institute for Social and Economic Change at Bangalore, a research institution of international standing. His main emphasis has been on improving the quality of teaching and research in the University. Functional English classes were started to induce students to read standard books and journal articles in English. To increase quality consciousness, the year 2000 was declared as Quality Improvement Year. Research Students were required to give three seminars during the course of their Ph.D., and Principal Investigators were asked to present their findings in Seminars before submitting final reports. Teachers' Assessment by students was initiated and Landmark series of Lectures in different disciplines were organised. The process of computerisation was strengthened in the Examination and Accounts Sections and more computers were added to Departments. Intercom was set up to facilitate quick communication. Most of the teachers are active researchers and they have been attending national and international conferences and seminars. They have been implementing research projects of social relevance sponsored by national funding agencies. The Report to NAAC was submitted seeking Accreditation and Based on the report submitted the NAAC conferred FOUR STAR STATUS to the university.
Prof. V. B. Coutinho
Took over as Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University, Gulbarga on 19th February, 2002. He was Professor of Law in Bangalore University, before joining as Vice-Chancellor during his tenure; University celebrated Silver Jubilee of the University during 2004-05. In his tenure the Library LAN & UGC Infonet facilities in library was established. Inter collegiate sports meet at Koppal was organised, Inter University Athletic Meet was organised, Silver Jubilee Guest House with 50 self contained rooms. 5 Nos. High Mast lights were erected. Established Vijnaneshwara Mitakshara Peetha at Martur. Establishment of PG Studies and Research in Material Science and also construction of new building for Material Science. Establishment of PG Studies and Research in Environmental Science at the main campus. Establishment of Remote Sensing (RS) & Geoinformatics System (GIS) lab facility at the Dept. of Environmental Science, sponsored by ISRO, Bangalore. The University has signed MoU with KSRAC for mutual exchange of expertise and information facilities enabling space technology transfer to this region. Many of the academic activities were implemented in connection of Silver Jubilee during his tenure. Chief Justice Dr. R.S. Lahoti and several other from judiciary participated in the said academic activities of the Silver Jubilee celebrations.
Prof. P. K. Tiwari
Prof. P.K. Tiwari, took over as Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University, on 18th February, 2006 as he was senior most Dean of Gulbarga University. He continued till 2nd July, 2006 when Prof. B.G. Mulimani took over as regular Vice-Chancellor of the University. During his short tenure of four and half months, many of the pending problems of the teaching and non-teaching staff were solved.

Prof. G. R. Naik
Prof. G. R. Naik Dean Faculty of Science & Technology has acted as Vice-Chancellor of Gulbarga University, Kalaburagi from 19-07- 2014 to 21-06 - 2015. Prof. G. R. Naik is a Biotechnologist with specialization in Plant Biotechnology and Bioenergy Processing. He has also worked as Registrar, Karnataka Satae Womens' University, Vijayapur from 2012 to 2014. He is also the Executive Member, Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board, Bengaluru.
Prof. S. S. Patil
Prof. S. S. Patil, Dean, being the senior most Dean, was appointed as the Vice-chancellor from 3-7-2014 to 15-7-2014. He is having 36 years of teaching experience. He worked as the Dean, Faculty of Law. He was the Chairman of the Department many times. He also worked as Academic Council member and Syndicate member.
